The Loire has a justifiable reputation as one of the greatest, grandest and most scenic rivers anywhere in Europe. In its most characteristic stretch, from the hills of Sancerre to the city of Angers, it flows past an extraordinary parade of regal châteaux, majestic palaces and sweeping vineyards; unsurprisingly, when it came to choosing which should be awarded the title of World Heritage.

With a length of 1, kilometres ( mi), it drains an area ofkm 2 (45, sq mi), or more than a fifth of France's land area, while its average discharge is only half that of the y: France. The Loire Valley is also known for its outstanding wines (red, white, rosé and sparkling) and lively, sophisticated cities, including Orléans, Blois, Tours and Angers – yet more reasons why the entire area is an enormous Unesco World Heritage Site.

We will be in France for 10 days in a couple weeks; I am trying to decide which guidebook to buy/take along. We will be renting a car for the first half and visiting Normandy, Brittany, & Loire Valley and then Paris for the second half of the trip.

We are big foodies on a not so big budget, looking for places to visit that are off the tourist circuit; also looking for cheap to moderately. Rouen is the capital of Haute-Normandie and owes everything to its advantageous location on the road from Paris to the sea.

Bursting with history, it has an abundance of atmosphere. A remarkable restoration programme has revitalised its narrow winding streets, bordered by beautiful wood-fronted houses. Several excellent museums, one of France's greatest Gothic cathedrals, and an attractive 5/5.

The Cité Médiévale, as the old walled town is now known, attracts over four million visitors every year, peaking in high summer. Time your visit for late in the day (or better still, for spring or autumn) to truly appreciate the old town's medieval charm.

Top sights in Carcassonne. Cité Médiévale. Château et Remparts. Basilique St-Nazaire. Abbaye De Fontenay 3. Cycling 4. Champagne Tasting at Épernay 5. Aix-En-Provence 6. Winter Sports in the Alps 7. Bayeux Tapestry 8.

The Louvre 9. Les Gorges Du Verdon Châteaux of the Loire Features of The Rough Guide to France. The festive and welcoming reputation of the Nord-Pas-de-Calais is well established. Throw in moules-frites (mussels and fries) and speciality beers, carnivals and festivals and you have a decidedly engaging region just waiting to be the sea, the pastel hues of the Côte d'Opale ("Opal Coast"), culminating in the capes Cap Gris Nez and Cap Blanc Nez, contrast with the port buildings.
