[Historical Records Survey (New York, N.Y.); Schomburg Collection of Negro Literature and History.]. In the Center published The Calendar of Manuscripts in the Schomburg Collection of Negro Literature, which includes item-level descriptions for the John Edward Bruce Papers, the Alexander Crummell Sermons and Letters Collection, the Paul Laurence Dunbar Collection, the Slavery and Abolition Collection and the West Indian (Haiti) Collection.

The first detailed description of the Division's manuscript holdings, the Calendar of the Manuscripts in the Schomburg Collection of Negro Literature, was begun that same year by the New York City Historical Records Survey, a WPA program; and the first phase of the work was completed injust two weeks before Arthur Schomburg's death.

An inventory was published in in the Calendar of Manuscripts in the Schomburg Collection of Negro Literature. The collection was microfilmed in May by the New York Public Library, and a guide to the microfilm was published in by Scholarly Resources, Inc.

Arturo asked. Amid the scholars, poets, authors, and artists of the Harlem Renaissance stood an Afro–Puerto Rican named Arturo Schomburg. InSchomburg’s personal collection — more than 5, books; 3, manuscripts; 2, etchings and paintings; and several thousand pamphlets — formed the core of the Division of Negro.

The present bibliography is designed to meet the current needs of students, teachers, librarians, researchers, and the general public for introductory guidance to the study of the Negro in the United States.

This bibliography is selective rather than exhaustive. Inshe and Ernestine Rose (head librarian at th Street) created a reference collection of books on the Negro and convened a meeting of community leaders (chaired by Arthur Schomburg) to help build the collection.
